COOPERATIVE HIGHLIGHTS

barry hart.jpg

The Association of Missouri Electric Cooperative’s Chief Executive Officer, Barry Hart, recently accepted U.S. Senator Christopher S. “Kit” Bond’s invitation to testify before the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works in Washington, D.C.  His testimony, given on behalf of Missouri’s electric cooperatives, encouraged committee members to take a fair, achievable and affordable approach to climate change and energy issues.  In his opening remarks, Bond showed the committee more than 30,000 signed cards he had received from Missouri co-op members (3,500 of which came from BREC members) asking him to make sure legislation on climate change and energy would be affordable and fair for states like Missouri who rely heavily on electricity generated by coal.   Click here to see and hear this testimony.

COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES IN ACTION

JS-safety.jpgKM-warehouse-web.jpgvisit2-web.jpg

Cooperatives like BREC provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their cooperatives. They inform the general public, particularly young people and opinion leaders, about the nature and benefits of cooperation.  The pictures above show kindergarteners receiving a lesson on electrical safety, FFA members learning about the co-op business model and co-op directors and managers discussing issues important to cooperative members and the rural way of life with State Senator Kevin Engler (center).

Having an informed membership is important to cooperatives.  Education, Information & Training, a cooperative principle that is put to use everyday at BREC.  Now that’s the cooperative difference!
