Phone Scam Alert
Black River Electric Cooperative is warning members of a recent phone scam that has targeted its members. The co-op is warning its members to be aware of suspicious phone calls from those claiming to be representatives from BREC.
The phone scammers generally will call impersonating a co-op employee and will demand immediate payment over the phone via a debit or credit card, and threaten disconnection. Some will instruct the member to purchase a prepaid debit card and call back with the card number.
Always be very cautious and do not give out any personal or bank information over the phone. BREC will not call and demand immediate payment over the phone via a debit or credit card.
If unsure if the caller is associated with your co-op, hang up and immediately call the office at 1-800-392-4711.
